On Wednesday October 28, 2020 the Saint Francis University Overwatch White team met at the Esports arena, in the bottom of the JFK Student Center. Members convened to play their fifth match and hopefully improve their record of 0 wins and 4 losses. One team member, freshman recruit and tank player Chase Forberger, played remotely but still did his best to protect his team. The team faced off against the Stockton University Ospreys. The SU Esports program is offered as a club sport.
The Starting Lineup for Wednesdays Match:
Requiem (Tank)(C)- Reinhardt
Chazz (Tank)- Zarya
Naturedhalo (Damage)- Reaper
Volleyballer (Damage)- Junkrat
Atlas (Support)- Moira
Perogi69 (Support)- Mercy
The first game of the match was played at Lijiang Tower, a control objective map. The team rallied together and was ready to take on the Ospreys. However, it wasn't long before the team had to pause, "Matt! I can't play! Stop!" shouted freshman Charles Deitke. Matt typed in chat to the other team that they needed to pause. The ECAC states in rule 14.7.4 that each team is only allowed only 3 pauses. Once Charles' hardware was fixed the game resumed. Round one was not the SFU's best, allowing a fast win for SU. Upon entering round two the white squad evaluated the ospreys play style and changed heroes to better combat it. Naturedhalo (Charles) converted to Parah, Perogi69 (Anthony) switched to Brigitte and Volleyballer switched to Reaper. The team seamed to have the round when they achieved 98% control without allowing SU Ospreys any percentage points. The game took a bad turn though when both support players died at the same time. This allowed to the Ospreys to push the Red Flash back and capture the point. Matt did not let this turn affect his team's morality though, reminding them that they could still come back. It was also rewarding to see that freshman Anthony (Perogi69) Perozich was rewarding play of the match by impressive use of his ultimate.
Game two of the match was played in Junkertown, an escort map chosen by the white squad. This gave the team some inspiration as they have previously had success in this objective. The team chose characters they thought would best fit the objective. Captain, Requiem, chose Winston. Naturedhalo played Widowmaker, Chazz played Zarya, Atlas played Mercy, Perogi69 played Lucio and Volleyballer played Junkrat. SFU started on the offense, which lead to a struggle. Volleyballer, Andrew, earned a 10 player kill streak, but the team almost didn't make it. They pushed the escort to the 3
rd checkpoint with 0.0 seconds remaining. In round 2 SFU white was on the defensive, similarly to round two of game one, both support players died simultaneously allowing the Ospreys to make extreme advances. The SU Overwatch team pushed the escort to the third checkpoint with 3 minutes and 10 seconds remaining. This meant that in round three SFU would have 1 minute while SU would have 4 minutes and 10 seconds to go the farther distance. It was almost assured that SU would take the round but the SFU Overwatch squad bunkered down to do what they had to. Through teamwork and strategy SFU amazingly beat the Ospreys in a wild turn of events.
Game three would determine the morale of the team, feeling confident from their previous round. The lineup the team entered game 3 with was as follows:
Requiem (Tank)(C)- Reinhardt
Chazz (Tank)- D.Va
Naturedhalo (Damage)- Doomfist
Volleyballer (Damage)- Junkrat
Atlas (Support)- Mercy
Perogi69 (Support)- Lucio
The attack game mode was played in Volskya Industries, as chosen by the Stockton University Ospreys. It was not a good round for the SFU team as the Ospreys took the game 2-0.
This left the team in a difficult spot. Game 4 could've continued the match or ended it. The team knew the weight to improve their record rested on this game. The Red Flash chose to play the hybrid game mode in Eichenwald. In preparation Volleyballer changed heroes to Ashe and Naturedhalo played as Soldier: 76. The game wasn't going well, as the team couldn't capture the point and therefore couldn't escort the payload. It an impressive play Requiem took out SU's support players and shouted to his team, "I got their healers! Go! Please!" The team did everything they could but ultimately suffered another loss to the Stockton University Ospreys.
Be sure to tune in next Wednesday, November 5
th as SFU approaches the end of the Fall semester and continues to try and improve their record. The game will be streamed on twitch.tv/saintfrancisesports and will commence roughly at 8pm EST.
